TREES

Trees are woody plants that usually produce one main stem (trunk) with a distinct and elevated head and a mature height of more than 15 feet. Some ornamental varieties are somewhat smaller and some have brilliant flowers. They grow lush green foliage in the summer and develop attractive ornamental leaf colors in the fall. Deciduous trees loose their leaves in the winter, with their bare branches and trunk texture providing ornamental interest.

Evergreen conifers have needlelike dark green leaves that remain throughout the year. Their foliage is dense and usually covers the whole plant. Conifers seldom have colorful flowers and usually feels massive and solemn. They are excellent at providing effective privacy screening year round and are good for blocking unwanted views or utility areas. Conifers are effective as wind breaks and blocking low angle sun. Because of their attractive shape, ornamental conifers are often used as a focal point in a balanced landscape.

Shrubs are woody plants that remain quite low growing with a mature height of less than 15 feet. Shrubs usually produce multiple stems or trunks growing from a common base, and comprise of varieties that are deciduous and evergreen. Ornamental shrubs offer a selection of foliage textures, flower and leaf colors, and overall sizes and shapes. GROUNDCOVERS

Groundcovers comprise any material that covers the surface of the soil so that it cannot be seen from above. From a landscaping point of view, groundcovers refer to low, mat forming or trailing plants under 18 inches tall that are not lawn grasses. Included are non-plant materials such as river rock, pea gravel, lava rock, bark chips, and mulch.

Thoughtfully chosen and placed groundcovers greatly enhance the beauty of our landscapes, while effectively serving cultural functions such as: conserving soil moisture, preventing erosion, obstructing or directing foot traffic, or filling narrow or odd shaped areas where mowing and edging are difficult. Additionally, groundcovers provide vegetation where lawngrass is difficult to maintain, such as areas of dense shade. Groundcovers also produce attractive and interesting patterns with variations in height, texture and color. Around buildings, groundcovers are superior to paving or structural controls for reducing heat, glare, noise, dust, and runoff.
