DECK MAINTENANCE

Our decks are designed to provide for many years of use, even in the arctic environment. Because we apply the greatest care and use the best available materials, we offer a 10 year guarantee on all new decks that we build. Regardless of this, the final phase of wood finishing remains very important to the success of your deck project. Following these guidelines will help you realize lasting value, and help you to protect your warranty.

1.SEAL ALL EXPOSED WOOD AS SOON AS POSSIBLE
Alaska's climate is very demanding on our outdoor projects constructed of wood. The advantage of its cost, strength, flexibility, and beauty are worth the effort of protecting wood from the rigors of our extreme weather. While cedar and other decking woods are very durable, the many hours of direct sun in the summer will cause it to dry out, possibly crack and turn a grayish color. Shoveling snow in the winter causes scratching, and the freeze/thaw cycle will degrade its finish. This is why it is so important to seal your deck as soon as possible following completion.
Tip:Unless you are experienced in wood finishing, using a professional contractor may be your best option. Regardless of whether you finish your deck yourself or contract the work, using the correct finishing products and procedures is very important. While we do not contract for wood finishing, our customers have had favorable results with "Cabot's" stains, seals, and cleaning products. Very valuable information may be found on Cabot's website at www.cabotstain.com.
2.ROUTINE MAINTENANCE
A properly sealed and/or stained deck will need to be maintained properly to keep its attractive appearance over time. The horizontal surfaces of your deck are subject to high foot traffic. Keeping it clean will prevent abrasive and discoloring materials from degrading the finish. Remove leaves, as they will cause staining. Experience has proven that in Alaska, your deck will need to be resealed every 2-3 years depending on its exposure.
Tip:"Cabot's" makes several useful products including cleaners, brighteners, strippers, stains, and sealers. Local dealers may be found on their website that will be able to recommend the best products for your deck. Always follow the manufacturer's application and safety advice!
We hope this guide will assist you in finishing and maintaining your deck. As it cannot cover every aspect of wood finishing, feel free to call us should you have any questions. Our staff will be happy to assist you in finding the information you need.
